Decorating & Making Bookshelves Visually Interesting…

{B Jones Style}

I was reaidng one of my fav blogs,  The Decorista when she highlighted This Office Space. What I love about the space is, she wasn’t afraid to show off pretty things. Often times we feel we have to contain every single thing in some sort of drawer or basket and that’s not true. Some things should to be shown. Notice some of the book covers on the shelves are facing you. Most people don’t do that but if you have a pretty cover, show it. It makes shelving interesting when the books aren’t laying the exact same vertical or horizontal way. Switch it up a bit. Same for desks or tables. Have a stack of books and have the prettiest and smallest cover on top.

Shelving isn’t just for books. Display vases, decorative platters, globes, candles and artifacts for an interesting look. If you collect things, here’s the chance to put bits and pieces of your collection on display. Don’t abandon the backs of the shelves either. As shown above, shiny tiled walls really make the wall unit stand out.

A lot of textures through out the space of this library/office. I really like the oversized blue chair which looks incredibly comfy for reading. Notice how they pulled that color out and found similar hued objects, pottery and books for the shelving. It makes everything cohesive. {weburbanist.com}

Anything done by color is visually interesting as this rainbow collection of books. Read on for more pics including one of my designs…

Use a 3 color pallete for book ends and items. Have two neutral colors like white & brown and then add a splash of color here & there…

Baskets are great to contain clutter and organize magazines…

Lastly, this is my own design for my parent’s rec room. I selected & placed every single piece with the exception of the books which were my dad’s & salvaged from a flood.  I personally like to add picture frames to shelves. It makes it that much more personal & as always, pics are conversational starters.

Hope this helped!!!
