Here’s round two and I’m showing you how paint can make a dark, cold attic space into something very bright and lively. If you haven’t already done so, click HERE to see part 1 of creative attic uses…

You can’t really tell but this one is an attic. Look toward the upper left hand side of the pic. You can see they used a rod and curtains to cut off the slope ceiling and hide storage. It’s similar to the pic below except they used the area for beds which would be cool for kids’ slumber bashes…

Very good use of space. Painting the walls, floors and ceiling white prevents this from being too dark considering there isn’t many windows to have natural light poured in…

Pt 1: Creative space planning & design makes attics with sloped ceilings functional…

I was a bit disappointed when I toured the Parade of Homes last month because majority of the rec rooms (basements) weren’t finished. Some of the homes weren’t even decorated in some areas. I was completely shocked when I came across this upstairs space in one of the model homes. Really? Completely unfinished, which I’m sure has to do with the economy. But it got me thinking about the different uses that space could serve…

I know often times people get frustrated when there is an oddly angled room. Especially if it consists of sloped ceilings. People feel very limited on what the use of the rooms can be and often times, it ends up dead wasted space. Here’s a ton of inspiration for you to make use of your attics. It’s all about having an open mind. These areas can end up some of the most coziest, functional, relaxing areas of the home…

The key thing is to get out the habit of pushing furniture against the wall. This is especially true for attics as some of the wall space is very short. Most furniture is too tall so this is where scale comes in. Make sure you select pieces that is to scale for the room. The only way any furniture can work in an attic is if it’s smaller and lower. Not paul bunyon sized beds with canopies and bedpost. Not usually at least. Try a platform bed that sits very low to the ground. Or even an air mattress. For this living space above, the sofas are in the middle of the room where there is more head space. Put a console table behind them to take up some of the dead space…

If you can’t spare a bedroom to convert into an actual office, use the attic. Just make sure to have adequate lighting…

Another living area where the furniture is in the middle of the room. If you must have a taller piece of furniture, don’t hesitate to position them on an angle…

Now I love this space above. Cozy enough to indulge in reading material. The skylight allows natural light to prevent the area from being too dark…

Great use of space in attics with sloped ceilings…

{Net Vibes}

This is an excellent use of an awkward sloped attic. Using low bookshelves for shoes and accessories and one rod for clothing turns, what probably would have been a junk room, into a fabulous dressing room. The metallic WALLPAPER really sets this room off…

{HGTV}

Here’s another room that appears to be an attic. Every inch of the room’s square footage is utilized. You have two separate conversation areas. Using a sectional can easily create this in your home.  There is shelving on the sides for tv viewing, an office desk area and even a popcorn maker/refreshment area…perfect for entertaining. Keep this type of layout in mind when converting a basement into apartment styled living for tenants or for your own attic space. It may be narrow but it’s about purchasing pieces to scale with the room to make it functional. Think about what you want the space for: to study, to work on projects and crafts, reading or just a sanctuary to get away from the rest of the family. Then create a floor plan that allows you to easily move around the areas. Design it in a way you would design the main part of your home. Use wallpapers, paint, adequate lighting to give it character & brighten it up. You then will have additional living space vs an unused room.
