Design Takeaways: Go Bold or Go Home…

image

I admire designers who can convince a homeowner to go bold with walls and ceilings. A lot of people shy away from it because of the labor and time it takes to change it all back if the look isn’t what they wanted. I understand that but wow…what a statement if you take the risk.

image

Going bold can also hide imperfections and take the focus away from eyesores. I think any major boldness I would do would be limited to small scales like a closet. What about you?

What a beautifully designed kitchen…

image

I said it before but oven range hoods are really taking over kitchen designs and can steal the show. This kitchen was designed by Matthew Quinn for the Kips Bay Showhouse last year. I love all of the materials from the counter to the backsplash, the range hood and lighting.

The built in cabinets look like decorative armoires and add a nice touch to the space…

The lighting pendants are fun and probably cast a nice design on the walls. You can see more of the kitchen and the neatly organized drawers here here.

Kitchen Options: Under Cabinet Lighting

image

I always say nothing beats ambient lighting. Lighting truly does wonders to transform a space and emit a certain mood. I love how under cabinet lighting can add a custom feel to a kitchen that may be on the ordinary side…

There are quite a few options but I prefer the inexpensive ones that don’t require wiring. You can get LED flexible strips on a light reel that runs around 7 bucks or puck lights with adhesive bottoms. Some of those are motion sensored so you don’t have to worry about wasting energy when someone isn’t home or in the kitchen. Some of the wireless lights can come with wireless switches.

Random retail therapy finds and decor indulgences…

I started this post days ago but of course wordpress was trippin’ and it didn’t save. Anyhoo, these gorgeous floor vases were at Pier 1 and would look nice in several areas of my home.

This lamp would be a side table’s piece of jewelry. You can’t tell but the inside of the lamp was a deep plum color. Very pretty….

Bold bathroom tile & wallpaper designs…

image

Soon I’ll be moving to my condo I’m buying and though it is move in ready, I can’t wait to be able to give my personal touch to things. One way you can do that is the bathroom. There isn’t a lot of wall or floor space usually so wallpapering a powder room or laying higher end flooring shouldn’t be too costly because you have a small area to work with.

image

It also may fit your budget if you splurge on marble for the bathroom sink vanity versus in a kitchen for countertops. You can sometimes find affordable slabs of stone that can get cut and sized to fit your needs in hardware stores or tile shops. A lot going on with patterns in the above bathrooms but it all works because it’s in the same color scheme…

I love how this bathroom has two mirrors on opposite ends giving it the illusion of a larger area….

Vertical stripes will make the ceiling of a bathroom feel higher…

The dentil molding in this bathroom is everything! I plan to add some sparkle to my walls and ceiling with chandeliers. Even a flush mount fixture will be enough to add some ambience to a bathroom or hall…

Changing hardware, lighting and decorative mirrors can add the oomph you need to tranform a bathroom into a fabulous space…

Tuesday’s Tips: how to transition your patio for fall

image

It’s starting to become crisp at night and you may be more inclined to stay inside once the sun starts to set. Well here are a few ways to get more use out of your patio for the fall months.

Texture
Adding a few cable knit or plaid throws are great to keep warm when it gets a bit chilly. Plus they are perfect for cozying up to take in an outdoor movie…

Firepit
They are good in the summer to create ambience but even better in the fall when you can roast smores on the fire…

Lighting
As the days grow shorter and shorter you will rely more and more on lighting. String lights will still look cool at all times of the year but heat lamps create light and keep you toasty…

Decor
Swap out any bright summary hues for muted, rustic, & jeweled tones.  Also replace floral blooms for branches and autumn leafy garland…

Eastside NY townhouse with beautiful molding and details…

The hardwood floors and molding is what stands out for me in this gorgeous space.  The lighting selected, lacquered painted walls and calming color palette makes it very inviting…

The pattern at the edge of the wooden floors are some of the design elements that makes the spaces pop. This arched entry and ornate details gives the townhome character….
