Tiny Tot Thursday: Marquee Letters for nurseries

image

While in a black hole of design browsing on Instagram, I came across this beautiful rustic nursery. You know I love marquee signs and letters so I think adding those to a kid’s room would be fun. It’s also a stylish alternative to night lights if there is just one small letter on the wall or shelf.

Retail Therapy: Pier 1 lamp score

image

Sorry in advance for the horrible lighting but Pier 1 had a sale over the weekend on floor display lighting and I scored this lamp originally priced at $99 for only $24. I couldn’t believe it. It’s chrome with an acrylic platform at the bottom, silver foil inside the shade and a metallic sheen on the outside. It looks gorgeous in my bedroom…

What keeps you inspired in the kitchen?

image

Lately I have been uninspired with cooking which is odd because I love to cook. I have found myself going to some of the same things and not really following recipes completely. I am not sure what it is but even with cleaning the kitchen, I prefer to only do it when it’s natural light otherwise I am unmotivated…

Parade of Homes Tour 2015

image

Last week I went to one of the subdivisions for the Metropolitan Parade of Homes which is a showcase of furnishings and trends in tile and interior design. These are real homes on the market and the builders really have some cool ideas. I’m finishing two more subdivisions today so there will hopefully be lots more pictures.

My dream closet essentials…

image
I was browsing Compass, a site that has thousands of real estate listings that makes the process of buying and selling a home seamless when it got me thinking. Sometimes I think homeowners put themselves at a disadvantage by not letting potential buyers realize what they could do with a space. Closets with only one rod and one shelf may make a buyer think they wouldn’t have enough room for storage. Just add another shelf or spend a little money and buy organizers to really utilize vertical space. It got me thinking about my own closet, which is functional. I even just bought legs for a table top to display my jewelry. But how cool would it be to have one big room for it all?
image
Here are my dream closet essentials. First I have to have a luggage bellman cart. I think they are incredibly stylish for having a weeks worth of outfits on display. The slack drawer would be great even for jeans and I would be able to see my pants at a glance. At first I thought sock drawer organizers were silly but they save you time. When I’m looking for my dress black socks, especially the ones that fit a certain way with certain booties and loafers, I think I could save more time seeing them all than having them all piled on top of each other.
image

I love coordinated storage bins in cloth materials and stores like Marshalls and Homegoods, TJ Maxx & Tuesday Morning all have really pretty ones in a huge variety of sizes and some are even at the $12-$20 price point. Below is a picture of mine…
image
I use them for laundry but you can use smaller ones for belts, socks, scarves etc…

image

I would have a super giant circular velvet tufted ottoman in the middle on top of a furry rug. I would need a large floor mirror. I would like to display necklaces on velvet stands like this because some baubles are too pretty to hide. For the ones that can get tucked away, I think I would line the drawers with leopard and maybe even have cheetah carpeting.

image
I think a few doors with mirrored and ornate detailing would be pretty as if I was in a Parisian parlour.
image
I’d need a few sparkly chandeliers and wall sconces too…

image

I like the idea of having fashion magazines on a table to be able to browse through for inspiration. I would use the Container Store’s items to organize earrings by metal and color. I like the foam inserts because they will keep the earrings in place as I open and close them. I like that the acrylic case allows you to see inside without wasting time opening the wrong drawers.

image

I’d like some sort of backlight on the shoe display and skylights or windows in an area by the vanity for natural light. Nothing irks me more than stepping outside and realizing you have on two different blacks. So natural light is essential. What are your must haves for a closet of your dreams?

My introduction to Arhaus…

image

I meant to post about my first introduction to the Arhaus showroom a couple months ago but forgot. I was in Shaumburg, Illinois at the Woodfield Mall heading to another store when store windows captured my eye. Everything was so glamorous and dramatic. The lighting was moody and gave this deep glow everywhere. I felt like I was in furniture heaven.

image

Then Jayson approached us. He was incredibly knowledgable about the products and even went as far as to rearrange some showroom pieces so I could get a better vision on what I had in mind.

image

I think I even mentioned that the pieces were out of my price range and he could have easily left me alone to approach other customers, but he didn’t. Even when one rude lady interrupted us to ask him a question and even tried to take him toward the area she needed help in, he politely informed her that he would finish up with us first before helping her. I was stunned as I never get that quality of service. Unfortunately some salespeople assume what customers will spend money based on appearance and even race. I’m a designer and though I was looking for myself, I could have been shopping for a client. Often times my experience in a store determines where I spend my client’s money. In college, one of my instructors told us if we ever design or work in a showroom, to treat all people equally. You never know who is sitting on money! In his experience, the most casual dressers ended up being the ones to spend a lot. So I appreciated Jayson’s professionalism during that time.

Some of my favorite lighting by them…and a fab mirror!

image

What I like about some of the pieces at Arhaus is the craftsmanship of the furniture. The distressing and carving in some of their furniture is all done by hand by Italian artisans to make each piece feel as if it has history.  They are having an annual storewide sale 20-40% off so you may want to check them out. No this isn’t a sponsored post, I just really like what they have to offer and can’t wait to make my first purchase.

What are characteristics of your ideal bar stool?

image

Some like ’em modern with clean lines or unique with odd interesting shapes, some prefer natural earthy wood materials while many like the industrial metal styles. Some love the cafe style while others need one with a back. I like them all from upholstered to masculine ones but lately I’ve really been wanting metals stools. There are so many fun styles and you don’t need a cocktail bar to use a stool. If you have a bar height dining table, you can use them on one side for a different loo,a breakfast bar, the laundry room counter, etc. I also like them used outside under a thin ledge for drinks or against a back wall for additional seating or to balance an entry vignette by filling space.

Sleek black matte faucets and fixtures..

image

Now that I am settled in my condo, I look for ways I can make it my own and one of the things I really love is sleek black hardware especially against marble. Though I am not planning to add any marble anywhere…I don’t  think, but I would love black matte hardware in one of my bathrooms that has a gray, black and white scheme.

image

The contrast just does something to the space. It just has an expensive look even against plain timeless subway tile.

image

When combined with a unique basin and light pendants, you can create a really neat look…

Whether you use a stainless steel or black sink, the faucets looks great with both…

Design Takeaways: Go Bold or Go Home…

image

I admire designers who can convince a homeowner to go bold with walls and ceilings. A lot of people shy away from it because of the labor and time it takes to change it all back if the look isn’t what they wanted. I understand that but wow…what a statement if you take the risk.

image

Going bold can also hide imperfections and take the focus away from eyesores. I think any major boldness I would do would be limited to small scales like a closet. What about you?
