Tuesday’s Tips: Picture Lights not just for pictures…..

image

When placing art in your home, the best thing you can do is properly illuminate the piece so that it can be appreciated in the best light. There are a few ways to do this, one being back lighting. This modern take is my personal fav. It also looks hip and cool if a built-in has back lighting. Here are some examples.

Love this purple illuminated collection display.

Halogen lights cast the purest white light which are said to be idea for illuminating most art. But they generate heat so they need to be placed far away enough to not affect it.

Pretty Valentine’s Kate Spade hearts inspired wedding & great tips for planning

image

Usually I think heart themed stuff csme come across as cheesy but not this wedding.
image
What I loved most was their unique guestbook idea…

image

They created a private Instagram account to keep funny, old, and embarrassing photos of all the guests from Facebook and then had them turned into cards on Printstagram. She wrote their names and table assignments on each, spray painted wooden hearts, hot glued them to mini magnets via & made heart magnets as favors. Then the magnets held the photo place cards on magnetic boards from Ikea.

image

image

Here are their tips: Use planners & Pinterest for gathering ideas and inspiration. Anything you can’t do yourself, buy from Etsy. You can’t do it all, so choose you battles. Do the DIY projects that you can, but don’t kill yourself over trying to do everything.
image

The bride said there were some projects she wanted to do but decided it wasn’t worth the stress, so she bought them already made or delegated helpful friends & family.

image

Their food was casual and messy so they opted out of super nice china and linen napkins instead using disposable bamboo plates and cutlery/napkins from Ikea. They didn’t want to spend a lot on paper goods so they skipped the programs and one of the bridesmaids made the menus.

image

They spent a little more to have the sequin linens, real flowers (put together by their planners), and the gray and white striped fabric for the tables. You can see more from their wedding in my champagne sequin tablecloth post. The bride advises spening money on the parts that are most important. I will like to add that details are important but some things will go unnoticed so don’t get so caught up in things that guests won’t remember.

Five Ways to Hide Your Television…

Five Ways to Hide Your Television

With TVs getting larger, but also slimmer and lighter, people are taking advantage of a myriad of different ways to integrate their television into their interior design.  From TVs that seem to appear by magic to TVs that really do appear by magic, the only limit to where your TV set lives is in your imagination.

Wall Mounting

The classic way to stylishly present your TV is to attach it to the wall. Any wall that has space at eye level is suitable for Vogel Brackets and a wall-mounted TV. The astonishingly light weights recorded by modern sets mean that many people can actually complete the job themselves.

Guest Post: Alex Webb on Making the Clearance Bin Your BFF…

I love budget friendly ideas primarily because I am a firm believer that you should be able to indulge in good design regardless of how little your budget is. So when Alex reached out to me about this particular topic, I was sold. Enjoy these fabulous cost effective design tips!

Make The Clearance Bin Your BFF

There’s no two ways about it – decorating on a budget is tough! If you aren’t carful, you end up with a hodge-podge of furniture, art, and accessories that look both uninviting and uninspiring. If you’ve drooled over the home magazines, rigorously studied channels like HGTV and DIY network, or gotten lost in the bottomless pit of the Internet, you know that there are tons of great decorating ideas out there. However, you’ve probably noticed that the majority of them are too expensive, require do-it-yourself skills far beyond your level, or call for an inordinate amount of time. It can be completely discouraging.

Have you ever heard the saying “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”? Guess what, when it comes to decorating on a budget that saying is spot on. Who exactly do you need to cozy up to? The Clearance Bin. You don’t just want to know the Clearance Bing – you need to make it your BFF.

Here are some tips for turning those clearance bin finds into a a budget-conscious decorator’s dream:

Paint

Visit your local hardware store and inquire about their marked down paint. Generally, this is simply paint that was mixed incorrectly (not to the customer’s color specifications). There’s nothing wrong with it, and the store’s mistake is totally your gain!

Home Tours of regular people & the tips they use for dealing with small spaces

image

{images by Patrick J. Hamilton}

Interior Designer Agustin Sanders’ 650 sq ft apt in San Francisco has a ton of style to be so cozy. Wine bar stools makes this kitchen an “eat-in” one by simply adding seating that takes up minimal space. You don’t need a full size table to have a bite to eat. This can work well for most smaller kitchens. Some tables are tall enough where the chair stools slides underneath, kind of like the ottoman/table combos. A cabinet topped with cushions provides some hidden storage and a window seat.

The numerous textures adds sleek and rough elements that keeps the space interesting. Making use of the additional floor space by the bay window, a sofa is placed there making the room double as a workspace.

Using a trunk or ottoman that can do double duty is key. This serves as storage for either kids toys or extra blankets etc. It’s sturdy enough to also function as a table. Using two small chairs keeps the furniture to scale for the room. You don’t always need a sofa and love seat.

image

Lack cabinet space? Use the tops if you have to for storing big appliances and pots. Utilize wall space with floating shelves for spices or a diner feel.

Mazen El-Abdallah, founder of Mazen Studio has the perfect design trick for keeping his space feel airy. He keeps furniture on legs to give an open feeling and keep everything feeling light versus heavy. He also filled the home with personal things like books and art collections. He likes for a space to feel as if everything has a story behind it. I hear of people saying they will personalize once they buy a home. Nonsense. Your apartment is just as much a home as someone’s house. You pay to live there every month so you need to feel the calming homely feel when you arrive each day after a day of work. Go on and put those pictures up and personalize.

image

I too like the usage of a big dining table as his office. He has more than enough room to spread out his work. If you don’t formally eat at the table, don’t be afraid to make the function tailored to your needs.

The kitchen was built by himself with Ikea cabinets and serves up a lot of style for a galley kitchen. That’s another thing, people get bent out of shape if they don’t have the sort of square shaped kitchen with an open floorplan and an island. If you own and are able to update the finishes, cabinets, floor and backsplash, do so. Make the best galley kitchen you can make. They don’t have to lack a nice aesthetic.

image

The bathroom was a complete reno. Soothing palettes and finishes help create a zen feel. I love it. Perfect for a bubble bath soak. See more of the space here.

Tuesday’s Tips: Raise curtain rods to give illusion of high ceilings…

via

Imagine if the rods were placed right above the window. It wouldn’t have the same feeling. By raising rods near the ceiling, it makes the space feel much larger than it really is. Perfect trick if you have a smaller room. Do this to draw the eyes upward

Tuesday’s Tips: the find-things-easier edition…

For this round of tips I decided to give you a few ideas to make life a little less complicated by freeing up the time you spend looking for things. First off, isn’t the above a great color scheme inspiration? I told yall, inspiration come from anywhere. Anyway, ever break or lose matching silverware sets? Well painting the tips is not only a cool looking thing but it’s a great way to distinguish between sets. Just remember don’t paint pass the handle.

So how many of us have ever misplaced our keys? Yep, I see hands raised everywhere. This idea not only repurpose frames AND coat hooks, but it’s a beautiful way to hang keys. Just create this look near a door for fab entryway design that’s also very functional. Bonus points if you find decorative keys as well.

So for those of you like my mom who stock up on canned items as if a blizzard or other natural disaster will keep you trapped in your home for eons, you will appreciate this. Using the cardboard container for sodas, insert canned items. An easy way to find your soups, fruit cocktails, beans, etc. Not only that, you can easily see when you’re low and need to replenish.

Tuesday’s Tips: Struggle to hang that photo? Try this…

While watching HGTV’s the High Low Project, Sabrina Soto came up with a great tip for hanging art. You know how sometimes they have that wire on the back and it’s so far down the frame that it’s difficult to “guestimate” where to put the nail? Well try this…

Put a nail through a paint mixer…
