Monday Morning Inspiration 1.27.14

One small thing I look forward to is making hot chocolate at work. It’s something I do during cold seasons and a small thing that makes me happy. I limit myself to one cup so I really savor every sip. I gueas the same can be said for life in general. We are all busy…we’re grown but often life flies by too fast the older you get. So I am trying to be present in the moment a bit more. We can be focused and driven while making sure we secure our futures but try to be in the moment sometimes and take life in…

Monday Inspiration 12.30.13 coffee and dessert

image

When you have this mentality, Mondays….and everyday will be that much easier to look forward to…
image

Sweet treats like the image I took above is what I looked forward to. Shortly after arriving to work a coworker shared these treats. The chocolate covered cookie dough balls were the best!

Monday morning cookies and dessert with coffee and hot chocolate sounds like a plan to me. Maybe I should do this every Monday….tradition for the new year.

iWant it all! Complete random wants from fashion to decor…

image

A company reached out to me for a product review of my choice and I opted for a chocolate fountain. It took so much for me not to select the disco balls though. I just love them in decor…

image

…iWant this range hood. The reason is self explanatory…

image

I have some black velvet necklace stands from Michael’s but iWant more so I can place them in a modular shelving unit and display each bauble as bedroom bling…

image

…iWant a few more statement necklaces to go on the stands from above….

image

.. iWant whatever camera or Android app that takes great pictures at night. This one above is amazing. Last night I tried to capture the moon over Lake Michigan here in Milwaukee as it’s probably going to be my last time there until Spring. (I LOVE THE WATER!!) but my photo was a fail. Even on the night option it didn’t nearly look like real life.

image

…iwant an ornate mirror….frame….and chalkboard. Even if I only use it for clients that hire me to style their events. Eventually I want to have core items on deck so when hired…I can tap into my personal stash of party goodies. This one could be used for so many things: a welcome sign…seating chart….menu board. It’s gorgeous…

image

…iWant some cheetah print heels. Not pumps but a mary jane or strappy heel. I find this pattern so sexy, on trend & a fun neutral…

image

…iWant….actually iNeed some black over the knee boots. Forget the fact that I am 5’3″. It’s all how you rock it to ensure you’re not swallowed whole. Some boots that stop right above my knee would be perfect. I have some but the rubber soles are worn down. I may get them repaired because they are perfect over jeans and leggings and great under a wider leg work slack to stay warm during the brutal Wisconsin winters…

image

…iReeallyWant herringbone wooden floors. No other flooring does it for me like herringone…

image

..iWant to master a black smokey eye. I nail brown smokeys but I’ve only nailed a black smokey once…and I had the nerve to not even go anywhere significant. Nothing worse than wasting good face…

image

Lastly, iWant to dine somewhere high in the sky. Actually I want to just live in the sky…a high rise somewhere. That is the goal…that is the life!

*sigh* back to reality.

Rant: Unrealistic Moodboards Most Can’t Afford and a High Low Black Gold Bedroom

image

A little annoyed at unrealistic “get the looks” floating around where the “affordable” items are $350 for a pair of book ends or $1,000 boots. Who the fu…..can afford that? I mean how many people do YOU know…that has $2,000 floating around for accessories only? Not including paint, supplies & furniture. Even if your clients are ballin’….betcha most of your readers aren’t. There are broke college students, broke post grads, adults with student loan debt, couples starting out and managing families with kids in high price daycares, homeowners trying to save for that new furnace they need before winter etc etc etc.

Fantasy wishlists and moodboards are cool and even moodboards that simply evoke inspiration. We all like Kelly Wearstler’s products but not many of us can spend $4,000 for one chair. If you are really trying to present items for people to source from…maybe try keeping in mind the people who are working with $500 budgets….who can’t spend 40% of it on ONE pillow. Or the many individuals who want style but aren’t stupid enough to charge a bunch of stuff to keep up with other people’s instagrams. Splurges are fine…treating yourself and saving up for something luxurious is cool and if you CAN afford it…great! For those that can’t…don’t get discouraged and think you have to take a loan against your 401K in order to have quality good design. Don’t get so caught up in brands and what everyone claims to afford that you end up putting yourself and your bank account at a disadvantage. Some people’s lives and photos seem so perfect….but you never really know what they are going through behind the scenes or what sacrifices it took to get to that level of financial freedom.

image

This isn’t suggesting everyone is internet frontin’…or intended to make someone feel bad if they are better off than some. I simply think some people are really out of touch with what affordable means. Affordable to you may be an area rug for $900 but others may want a bit more bang for their buck if they are spending the same amount as their rent or mortgage for decor. So I made a high low mixture of a favorite black and gold color combo. I think everything would work beautifully in a bedroom. You have bedding from Zara Home, accessories from Tarsjay (Target) & Z Gallerie and more. I’m talking some stuff is $9.99. Now THAT is really affordable.

Indulge Daily 8.23.13 I want this cheetah rug plus a real honest dialogue by me

image

I think this rug is just gorgeous. It’s one of those animal print designs that aren’t overwhelming in a space and can look good in a large square footage or something smaller like a runner. I also like the contrast of the deep sea green walls and the airy creamy space you see through the door. This home belongs to designer Erin Williamson and you can see more on Desin Crisis.

I also want to take a moment and ask how many of you send emails to photographers, magazines and designers to ask for written permission to post images? I know a lot who don’t. I honestly thought citing source correctly and mentioning as much info as you can (stylists, florists etc) along with linking back was sufficient. For most it is. I’ve had many email me thanking me for featuring their work. A lot of people are happy to have the free promotion especially when good comments and kudos are being made. However I see that’s not always the case.

The reason I asked is because I was contacted twice about removing a couple designer’s work. I understand why…but I also wonder how would people feel being bombarded by the bloggers constantly aaking for permission. Would that become daunting? Then I think about how much time it would take to form a blog post if you had to wait on returned emails. I guess I see why so many do product roundups and collages and share only pics they take. I started blogging because I wanted to compile everything that inspired me. I guess I still have my Pinterest account to share through and there are over 4,000 people indulging in my pins but here on out my blog, that sharing of fab events and interiors will change a little. You can now add me to the list of people who find things they like in the furniture and decor world. I’m sure stores won’t be mad with the “shout outs”. I will also make time to venture out in my city and find local places to take photos of and share whether it’s their products or the design of the space. I will even start making time to tackle my list of personal diy projects I have put on the backburner since I avoid being cooped up inside when I have a summer to enjoy. If clients approve, I will share my projects. I will still share other stuff like normal but it will be from people/companies who don’t mind link backs. If I come across a porfolio, I may just do a link love instead. (It’s where bloggers have a small list of things they fancy around the web). Basically I will start aiming to have more original content.

I guess this can be a bit of a good thing. Change is good right? Maybe I will be more interesting as a blogger AND interior designer (if you didn’t know…blogging isn’t my day job and I have a degree in interior design). To be honest this recent incident put a damper on things and made me uninspired. I almost didn’t want to resume. Blogging is already very time consuming. Then after talking with other people who I look up to like Erika Ward, Nicole White briefly and a very candid convo with Jessica Rowe, along with some friends, my homeboy and mom…I shouldn’t let this discourage me or stop. I’m almost at a million blog views and I’ve met some wonderful people and designers because of it. So no… I don’t want to stop any longer. I will keep on…and I will get better and greater.

If you have any design projects, if you’ve completed a diy project or have an amazing tip for my Tuesday’s Tips series, please email me. I will love to view and possibly share your work here.

Monday Morning Inspiration 8.19.13 enjoy your own company

image

Some people feel like doing activities alone means you’re lonely or that you don’t have anyone to enjoy those things with. It may be the case sometimes but for some people it’s the furthest from the truth. You should be able to do things you love solo and enjoy it. I recently wanted to see a movie that no one else wanted to see so I went….alone….one Saturday afternoon. I felt weird at first. But I wasn’t treated funny and didn’t have any crazy stares. As a matter of fact, there were other solo movie goers. I fit right in. I enjoyed the movie and being by myself. Now, you still won’t catch me doing that on a Friday night but for an afternoon? Why not. Why wait until it hits the red boxes in Walgreens parking lots. The same can be said for traveling or dining out. There are often several things I want to try or places I want to go that may not interest my friends etc but that shouldn’t stop me from having those life experiences. So here are some ways I enjoy my own company. Nail polishing, books, magazine reading, drivingwith my hair blowing everywhere (only to fix it at each red light), walking, sight seeing, people watching, the lake, beach. When it comes down to me skydiving, I’m sure I will be solo on that one lol. (I was shocked my sis n law and nephew got on the Big Shot on top of the Stratosphere in Vegas with me…I was sure I would be alone).

What are some ways you enjoy hanging with yourself? What are some things you want to try solo dolo but haven’t yet had the courage or opportunity?

Indulge Daily 7.8.13 lovely secluded outdoor space with bright patio chairs

image

My weekend was fabulous: Fireworks, firepits, cocktails, bbq, art museum, lake front (lake michigan), summerfest, cocktails, Nelly Concert, shopping at an outdoor mall, pizza, cocktails, hot weather, and an outdoor movie sums it up. See images on instagram. I had a ball every single day since I’ve been off work but it wasn’t long enough. I didn’t take off diy projects from my to-do list because frankly, I can’t fathom sitting in my place when there is warm weather to enjoy. This summer is going super fast and I am trying my best to celebrate the days and enjoy what I can. This month Milwaukee has plenty of festivals and each weekend through the first weekend of August, I will be at one. Two on some weekends. I also want to go to the beach, have a blanket picnic at the lake & make my way to Chicago at least two more times this summer. What do you have planned?
