Hosting a party or get together can easily turn into a daunting task for those who never really do it. Questions about colors and themes, what to get and where to get them from easily make something that should be fun…into a stressful situation.Add on the task of keeping the atmosphere going and one can surely stress themselves out.

With all the upcoming festivities, here are some tips on keeping that bar/beverage area on point. These will make your party tonight or in the upcoming future run smooth.

Soaking a sugar cube in bitters in the glass, then top with bubbly. Or just add a splash of fruit-based liquor to your champagne for a DIY Royale.

Setting up the bar you will need a bar knife for garnishes, tongs, bottle opener, strainers, shakers, bar towels, spoons (for cherries etc), ice bucket, ice, trays, napkins and coasters, bowls (garnishes) rugs (floor protection).

I first blogged about the above pic in this post. Zoe, who is planning her wedding and looking for a sequin tablecloth has asked me where to locate the one above. After aome searching, I found the whole wedding on … Continue reading

Inexpensive decor & garland ideas using paper lunch bags!!!

image

I’m saying though….who would think to use paper bags as decor. Evidently these creative people and I am biting the above idea for a work event. A lady in our dept is retiring so this will be fun and festive. I will add letters to the bags to say congrats etc. When you factor the cost of bags, using twine, fishing line, ribbon or strings & clothes pins…this is a very cost effective way to jazz up the backdrop of a food buffet table…

Vintage Marquee Signage and Letters with lights…

As a designer I pay attention to the details of everything. When one of the Kardashians instagrammed themselves in front of a stove, I think I was the only one who looked first at the backsplash. When I go to … Continue reading

A lovely gold, tan & coral tablescape….

image

This tablescape is stunning. Love the hues and how warm it feels. Pretty and light for a Spring or summer wedding and perfect for fall. The burlap natural elements makes it a little rustic. The gold accents brings in the glam. I also like the idea of different seat cushions. Making sure the colors stay in the same party, keeps the look cohesive despite various patterns.

Apple baking & decorating: wedding centerpieces, cider stations, recipes & candy apple parties

image

In Wisconsin we had a super mild winter which had an impact on our apple orchards so a lot of farms didn’t offer apple picking due to the shortage. I was looking forward to it too since I went last year. But it’s still a great time to bake, cook, drink….and even decorate with the fruit…

image

When people have fall weddings, especially rustic barn ones, I love to see apples on display. Paired with wine barrels and other woodsy elements like branches, it offers a pretty fall atmosphere…

image

But you don’t have to have an outdoor wedding. An upscale one inside a hotel is just fine…

image

My favorite part of fall is caramel apples….and fall colors. You can set up an interactive candy apple bar for a fun end to a party. That can serve as guests’ favors as well for a wedding…

Apple cider stations are another great way for guests to mingle….

image

I destroyed an apple crisp a few weeks ago. I put it on broil because I was too impatient with it baking. Walked away & four minutes tops….the top layer was charred. I said I enjoy cooking, not baking. But I will master it because it’s just so good.

I recently did a Rachael Ray recipe with maple glazed apples, potatoes & sweet onions. I’m very picky but it was good surprisingly. I want to try the above.

Time to start brainstorming on that New Years Decor…

New Years Eve…a time of new reflection, new beginnings and parties!!! I still love the gold decor that runs wild on this night. Here are some fab party ideas, place settings and tablescapes with the bronze and gold hues. With 2 weeks away, I figured I’ll give yall a head start on some ideas…

This appears to be some neat crafty projects using paper and garland. I hate garland with a passion, it just screams 90s and old Christmas decor but you can always improvise and use it in other ways. On the base of a hat is actually pretty neat…

Cake stands keeps the party favor bags together…

Michael’s and Jo-Ann Fabrics (they should really cut the check as much as I shout them out on this blog) have 3D cardboard letters that one can dip in glitter to match the scheme you’re going with. They literally cost a couple bucks…

A combination of fishing line and metallic wrapping paper can get you a Martha Stewart streamer creation. I actually did this for a client’s wedding once. It turned out pretty nice and the silver paper glimmered beautifully against the dimmed candlelight and chandeliers. See it HERE

Wedding Wednesday: Contemporary Cabo by Colin Cowie

Every so often I look at Colin Cowie’s site…just cuz. Just to solely admire all the details put forth in each bash he designs. This wedding in Cabo is one of my favs. I mean, to have a pathway leading to the very spot you’re going to say your vows lined with planted calla lillies? Just gorgeous…

The sea of lucite ghost chairs against this serene backdrop breathtaking….

Creating a lounge area in the reception space encourages guests to mingle as if they were in a club setting…

Allowing guests to have access from all angles to the candy buffet is a smart idea. I did the same when doing my own client’s WEDDING.

Whats Been Up…

Hey y’all…Sorry for the delay. My week started with a strange cold. I had flu-like symptoms minus coughing & sneezing and end up leaving my 8-5 and calling in the following morning, something I rarely do. On top of that, I’ve been very busy. A friend of the family has a daughter who is getting married and they are seeking my “designpertise” (AYE, I’ve never heard that phrase before so if you steal it, give credit, LOL). Now, I’ve never done any major event with the exception of my cousin’s anniversary party which I talked about here  http://wp.me/p1b5jY-3f . For that I did the head table decor with rose balls & tons of rose petals & candles

wishing well tree I created

For this wedding? I’m required to do the outside entry, outside courtyard/tent area, inside lobby, candy buffet (if u don’t know what that is see http://designindulgences.wordpress.com/2010/11/10/dessert-and-candy-buffets ….), 16 cabaret tables, the table linen, chair covers & sashes & centerpieces with real flowers all visually pleasing for 390 guests. *wipes sweat from forehead* I’m nervous as I’m a 1 woman show but I’m very excited. Also thankful. The client said she loved what I done with my parents rec room and the anniversary party and she’s confident I will execute her daughters wishes….and THAT I will do. The wedding is April 30th so for the next 5 or so months, that will be my “baby”.

Stix and Stones…Decorating w/Tree Branches…

Tree Branches have become all the rage over the last couple years. You see them for wedding receptions during the holidays when couples want to create something magical & winter wonderlandish. You see them during the fall months when tablescapes are lined up with branches & faux leaves. A new trend is the wishing well tree, something I created for my cousin’s 10th anniversary party this past July. A wishing well tree is basically another form of a guestbook except instead of signing a book, people write notes on pieces of paper and hang the notes on the branches as a keepsake for the couple. Wishing well trees aren’t limited to weddings and anniversary parties, you can also have them for showers (bridal, wedding, baby) or even birthday parties. How about a get well wishing tree for someone battling an illness who’s stuck in a hospital room? Your entire family could write notes sure to lift the loved ones spirits and leave a little bit of “décor eye candy” for their room. The possibilities are endless.
